From the global financial crisis, to a slowdown in Brazil and China’s economic growth, coffee lovers continue to enjoy their caffeine fix, keeping the industry hot and steamy, while many thought there would be signs of cooling down.
Originally a tea drinking nation, China‘s coffee consumption has grown seven times faster than the global average, boosting business for coffee companies, big and small. According to the China Coffee Association Beijing, China’s coffee consumption is growing by 15 percent every year, compared to two percent globally. However, China has a lot of catching up to do, at the moment the consumption is only 5 cups a year per person compared to 300 in Japan.
In India, tea and coffee manufacturers have staged a bitter rivalry over which hot beverage is the national drink – but in an effort not to hurt the business of either industry, the government’s ministry of commerce has stayed out of this battle, refusing to promote one over the other. “There is no doubt that coffee has gained significant popularity across India in the last few decades,” a coffee official told the Daily Telegraph. The is mainly due to the popularity of coffee chains like Starbucks, Coffee Cafe Day and Barista, and they specially appeal to the urban middle class.
In Russia too, the main non-alcoholic beverage has been tea but in the last two decades Russians have adopted coffee more and more. Globalization and the ever-growing coffee culture contributed to their change in hot beverage preferences. Russians are very price conscious about their coffee making the country the world leader in instant coffee consumption, which is often a lot cheaper than freshly ground coffee.
In 2014, Brazil maintained its position of largest producer and exporter of coffee and second largest consumer of the product in the world. Coffee production reached 45.34 million bags of 60 kg of processed coffee, in 15 states, especially Minas Gerais, which accounted for 49.93% of national production. Today, coffee is an essential source of income for hundreds of municipalities as well as being the main source of jobs in the country’s agricultural sector. Having said that, sustainability and the environmental impact of coffee production caused many discussions among the trade association, coffee producers and consumers. The result was an increased awareness about these issues and coffee producers are starting to develop ways to produce and more sustainable and high quality product.
